How does a ProMate 6.0 water softener work?
1. Hard water enters your water softener and passes down through the ion exchange resin, which are charged with sodium ions. The hard water ions (calcium and magnesium) are attracted to the ion exchange resin and an equal amount of sodium ions are bumped off into the water supply. When the water reaches the bottom of the tank, it is softened and ready to be used in your home and business.

2. When the ion exchange resin is saturated with calcium and magnesium (hard water ions) it must be recharged. A strong brine solution enters the tank and flushes the calcium and magnesium ions off the ion exchange resin and attaches itself.

3. A final rinse process ensures that any unused brine is rinsed from the system and your ProMate conditioner is now fully recharged and ready to provide you with soft water.

4. Your ProMate control valve controls this entire process, including the frequency of regeneration.

Going Green With Brine Recovery.

For years many large commercial and industrial users have utilized Hellenbrand’s brine recovery systems to both lower their operating costs for salt and reduce the amount of chloride discharge, thus paying for the investment many times over. However the up-front investment required to accomplish this made it cost prohibitive for smaller systems, like those used in the residential market.

When Hellenbrand designed and engineered the ProMate 6.0, one of our goals was to be able to provide brine recovery. This complements the savvy consumer who is concerned with chloride discharge impacting the environment and also looking to reduce their operating costs for salt - which is the fuel needed to run your water treatment.

How it works
All cation exchange water conditioners utilize salt to recharge the cation resin as described on page two of this brochure. As the strong salt/brine solution comes into contact with the resin beads it pushes off the calcium and magnesium “hardness ions” flushing them to drain while sodium ions attach themselves to the resin beads. In the beginning stages of this regeneration process the waste/drain water has very high concentrations of the hardness minerals calcium and magnesium. As time passes the hardness concentrations drop off dramatically leaving a high concentration of sodium in the waste/drain stream that did not attach to the resin beads, making this the ideal time period to recover the unused salt. As the regeneration time continues the sodium concentration drops off dramatically in the waste/drain stream and we no longer recover.

Savings
By diverting the extra salt water back to the brine tank during the highest salt concentration, as shown on the graph, a 20% or greater savings in salt can be obtained. All of this is easily controlled by the ProMate 6.0 electronics.
